Summerhill Place Apartments Provides Electric Car Charging Stations

Summerhill Place Apartments Provides Electric Car Charging Stations

Andre Molnar-Development Project Manager comments: “Cars produce a lot of greenhouse gas emissions. We are committed to doing our part to protect our environment for future generations. Environmental Stewardship is a key component in our buildings. Complimentary Electric Car Charging stations is one of several environmental initiatives in our development.”

Electric cars do not require gasoline. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions as well as reducing our need for petroleum products. They are also very quiet and enjoyable to drive.

Canadians spend, on average, 3.245% of their income on gas. About $1510 per person, per year. Source: manitobaev.ca/ev-news/how-much-do-canadians-spend-on-gas/

The use of electric and/or hybrid cars can significantly reduce this expense. The annual cost to charge an electric vehicle is estimated at $250-$700 per year based on annual usage. Source: http://electricvehicles.caa.ca/electric-vehicle-cost-calculator/

The Summerhill Place Apartments is happy to pay this expense in order to fulfill their responsibility to the environment. This is a considerable savings for tenants. For more information, check out our website at www.SummerhillPlaceApartments.com

Summerhill Place Apartments Donating Two Cars to Nanaimo Car Share

The Developers of the Summerhill Place Apartments are donating two cars to the Nanaimo Car Share Program. As well, they have included complimentary parking for car share vehicles in their parking plan. Andre Molnar-Development Project Manager comments: “We believe in doing our part for the protection of our environment. Donating car share vehicles and complimentary car share parking is part of our overall commitment to environmental stewardship.”

 It’s Better For The Environment
Car Sharing reduces C02 emissions into the atmosphere by millions of pounds. It reduces the overall emissions by choosing newer, more fuel efficient vehicles, as well as reducing the total number of cars on the road. This means less traffic, less emissions and less overall impact on our planet.

It Promotes Good Health
Most car share drivers choose walking, cycling and public transit as their main mode of transportation. They use Car Share vehicles only when necessary.

It’s Less Expensive
Car Share drivers spend less on overall vehicle expenses and there is less wear and tear on our roads-which means lower infrastructure costs for our city.

It’s Convenient
How many drivers do you see out there in large pick-up trucks that are used for daily commuting? Car Sharing allows drivers to choose vehicles specific to their need and only rent larger vehicles when required.

3 Takes on Modern Apartment Design

Modern living seems to be what everyone strives for in one way or another. Even the throwback artisans that want to make their own candles and bake bread from scratch do not shy away from modern conveniences like washing machines and the internet. The three apartments featured in this post, each of which measures in at 60 square meters (645 square feet), uses modern sensibilities and style to create welcoming, beautiful homes for their inhabitants. Take a look inside these three apartments from designer Kostya Entaltsev.

LED Lighting Installed in all Tenant Suites

The Summerhill Place Apartments have installed energy efficient LED lighting throughout the building interior and exterior; including the interiors of the suites. Andre Molnar-Development Project Manager comments: “LED Lighting is the future. It’s more efficient, lasts longer and is more durable. We made the decision to add LED lighting to the interior of the suites at an additional cost as part of our Environmental Stewardship initiative. We believe in doing our part to conserve energy and protect the environment. Plus it’s an added benefit to our tenants”
According to BC Hydro, LED lighting is:Generally more expensive than other lighting options, ENERGY STAR LEDs save money because they use at at least 75% less energy than incandescent lighting and last a minimum of 25,000 hours, or 25 years based on average household use.
That life span is about 15 to 20 times longer than incandescent lighting, and about three times longer than CFLs.” Source: https://www.bchydro.com/powersmart/residential/savings-and-rebates/new-electricity-saving-products.html#ledlighting
According to a recent BC Hydro study: “Those in Nanaimo apartments (Group 2) had an average monthly bill of $84 ($20-$255).” Source: https://www.bchydro.com/content/dam/BCHydro/customer-portal/documents/corporate/regulatory-planning-documents/regulatory-matters/2015-02-16-rda-fg-frpt.pdf
LED lighting in the residential units means that tenant hydro bills can be reduced up to 75%. On an average monthly bill of $84 the monthly bill reduces to $21. That’s a monthly savings of $63.
Better for the environment and an added benefit to our tenants.

Nanaimo’s tourist industry is enjoying its best summer tourist season since 2008.

Tourism Nanaimo credits summer festivals such as the Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival and events such as the B.C. Athletics Jamboree for driving up tourism numbers and packing hotels from Ladysmith to Qualicum through the July 10-11 weekend.
Dan Brady, Nanaimo Hospitality Association chairman and the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation’s appointed tourism committee representative, said local tourism statistics are finally getting back to pre-recession levels.

“June, in Nanaimo, that was our best June – we’re at 70-per cent occupancy – that’s the best it has been since 2008,” Brady said.
The hospitality association represents Nanaimo’s 24 hotels, motels and other accommodations

providers.
According to a report by Chemistry Business and Human Resource Consulting, year-to-date figures are up from 2014 across the board for daily room rate occupancy, room rates and revenue.
The same is true for foot passenger and vehicle traffic at B.C. Ferries’ Duke Point and Departure Bay terminals. Showing the biggest year-to-date gains are the Nanaimo Airport with 138,430 passengers through its terminal, up 13.9 per cent, and the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, hosting 12,135 delegates for an 89.9 per cent jump over 2014.

Tourism Nanaimo also reports more than 7,000 people visited its Northfield and Bastion visitor centres – up seven per cent over 2014’s second quarter. About 10 per cent of those were visitors from the U.S. compared to four per cent in 2014.
The average length of visitors’ stays is longer too, about seven to 14 days and each visitor spends about $130 per day.

Brady and  Lesley Anderson, Tourism Nanaimo executive director, credit favourable tourism numbers with the currently low loonie, which is drawing more U.S. visitors and causing locals to vacation close to home. Sports events and summer festivals are big draws, too.

“There are a variety of contributing factors,” Anderson said. “The dollar is a good one. It encourages people to stay-cation, for one, but also Canada and Vancouver Island are a great value.”
“Everything’s helping,” Brady said. “It’s a bit of everything.”

City of Nanaimo Water Supply Update

NEWS RELEASE

City of Nanaimo water supply update

Nanaimo residents demonstrating excellence in conserving water

Summary

Nanaimo residents have continued to respond to the elevated water conservation measures implemented June 15. Daily consumption has declined by 15 per cent, from 59.5 million litres per day to 50 million litres per day. Under level two conservation, even numbered addresses can water on Wednesdays and Saturdays while odd numbered addresses can water on Thursdays and Sundays.
The City of Nanaimo’s water supply at Jump Lake is currently 78 per cent full. Compared to previous years, summertime draw-down started approximately one month earlier than normal. Given the storage level and the corresponding level of consumption, the City is confident there is sufficient water storage to last into November.
Strategic Link: This supports the strategic priority of water and encourages conservation.

Key Points

  • Nanaimo residents have been self-regulating in response to the warmer drier weather and practising water conservation. There have been significant declines in consumption compared to earlier years.
  • The City believes that education and encouragement rather than enforcement has contributed positively to conservation.
  • The increased conservation level supports the Province's call for voluntary water use reduction and helps to ensure the City's water supply will remain in good shape for the duration of the summer.
  • This is the sixth update on water levels since late March, when the City advised it was monitoring water levels and climatic conditions carefully. The City will continue to monitor and provide updates to the public.

Quotes

"Two main factors have helped build resiliency to drought: Nanaimo residents have been practising water conservation for decades, to the point that overall annual consumption is declining year over year. The second factor is that Jump Lake - the source of supply - is located well back in the mountains and received significant rainfall in the early spring, leaving it full by early June. The City's water supply is in good shape with sufficient water to last into November. This cautious approach will ensure that the system remains robust.
We are very impressed with residents' positive response in conserving water; a 15 per cent drop since implementing level two restrictions is very significant. Also, we encourage residents to let their lawns go naturally dormant during the summer and look forward to green lawns when the fall rains start."

Summerhill Place Apartment Building Progressing

Nanaimo's stock of new residential apartments will be increased by 103 units when this 4 storey frame building on Summerhill Place comes onto the market.

The building's address is on Summerhill Place which comes off of Dufferin but the back of the building is fronting Townsite Road near Bowen Road.

When this building was first proposed some parking concerns were expressed by nearby neighbours as the owner/developer had sought a relaxation of parking stalls required per unit. The building is likely eyeing staff working at nearby NRGH and any of a number of medical professional buildings in the neighbourhood as future tenants.
